The Melbourne Museum is located in Nicholson Street, Carlton which is about a five minute drive from Melbourne CDB.  The museum is a cultural history museum which is adjacent to the Royal Exhibition Building and is the largest museum in the Southern Hemisphere.

Pauline Gandel Children’s Gallery

For babies to 5 year old kids, the Pauline Gandel Children’s Gallery is the place to be.  This amazing gallery is a fantastic place for kids to learn and be inspired.  Children are able to excavate fossils in the dinosaur dig, explore the discovery gardens, dance in the camouflage disco, read books and play with the hands on educational experiences.  The kids all need to take off their shoes, so please make sure you take the correct ones when you leave. No shoe swapping!!

Dinosaur Walk

Step back in time with Skeletons of 17 prehistoric animals.  There are animated reconstruction shows that will show you how the Dinosaurs lived, reproduced and died millions of years ago, which is pretty cool.  You are able to walk around them, under them and there’s even a place where you can touch the dinosaur teeth.

Bugs Alive

This area we didn’t spend too much time in as my daughter was quite scared.  Here you will be able to see, hear and smell insects, spiders, butterflies and all kinds of creepy crawly bugs.  In my daughters opinion, “DISGUSTING” was the word of choice.  Here you will learn about what they eat, how they live and what they do in their daily life.  The Quarantine room holds rare living examples of exotic tarantulas and redbacks, so if this is your thing, make sure you check it out.

Our Thoughts

Overall we had a fantastic day out.  The Melbourne Museum is a wonderful place and very educational not only for the kids, but for the Adults too.  There are so many other sections in the Melbourne Museum, that we didn’t have time to explore, but we will definitely go back soon and check them all out.  Remember it takes a little longer to see everything when you’re there with the kids, so take your time and plan to be there for most of the day.

I was a paying guest at the Melbourne Museum and as always I would never endorse or recommend a service or product that I didn’t honestly enjoy.
