Sunscreen.  How important is it?

I decided to write this post to not only inform you, my lovely readers, but to remind myself and make an oath at the same time to NEVER, EVER get sunburnt again.

A few weekends back, I did something very, very silly.  We drove down to Rosebud Beach for the day and the weather was 19 degrees and very overcast. I was dressed in jeans and a long sleeve top.  The sun came out for a little while, but nothing that I thought I needed to worry about.

Then in the afternoon, the clouds completely disappeared, the sun came out and I got changed into a beach dress and wore my big brimmed black hat, but unfortunately, little do I know at the time, that the hat was, too little, too late.  When I got home that night, I went for a shower  to wash off all the sand and when I came out, my face was so burnt, that it made me feel sick.  That night I suffered from severe sunstroke and had hot and cold chills.  It was the worst night I had in a long time.

Too make it worse I had to have the following two days of work to recover. I couldn’t eat because my mouth was so sunburnt that I couldn’t open my mouth.  My skin felt so dry and tight (you know that feeling when you put on a mud mask and it dries and then you peel it off) well that’s how my face felt.

Lesson learnt.  No matter what the weather is, check the UV rays indicator. For those that don’t know, UV (Ultraviolet Radiation) is a type of radiation that is produced by the sun and some artificial sources such as solariums.  The sun’s UV radiation is the major cause of sunburn, premature ageing, eye damage and skin damage leading to skin cancer.   For me, my skin is very pale, (Fully White) as my husband likes to say, so I need to make sure I slip, slop, slap at ALL times.

You can check online anytime, anyplace and find out what the UV Index will be in your area so you can be prepared.  My ideal sunscreen is the Le Tan Coconut SPF50+ Spray 250mLIt rubs on so smoothly and has a beautiful coconut scent. It’s also the highest level of sun protection with a handy trigger spray for easy application.  LOVE.

For my daughter who has an olive completion I like to use the Le Tan Active Kids SPF50+ Lotion.   This product is non-greasy (fantastic to apply on kids who don’t like being rubbed down) with aloe vera and Vitamin E to soothe and moisturise.  Although she never burns (and only tans) as people say, I want to make sure her skin is protected at all times, especially when she is in the water.  This lotion is also 4 hours water resistance.  Oh and did I mention the fragrance?  It smells like ice-cream. Delicious.

Thank you for taking the time to read this important post and I hope you realise how important it is to wear sunscreen when you’re outdoors.  Remember to always SLIP, SLOP, SLAP and put on a hat.
